The stage is set for the return of one of Ghana’s newest and most exciting additions to the national sporting calendar—the Democracy Cup Match. The Parliamentary Service of Ghana has announced that the 2nd Edition of this annual football event will be hosted in August 2025, continuing what is fast becoming a vibrant tradition that merges sports, democracy, and national unity.
The official launch of the 2025 Democracy Cup will take place at Parliament House, specifically in the Justice D. F. Annan Auditorium, on Wednesday, July 24, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. The Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, will lead the event, unveiling key details, including the two football clubs that will face off in this year’s edition.
The Democracy Cup was first introduced in 2024 as part of Parliament’s effort to commemorate and celebrate Ghana’s democratic journey through the unifying power of football. The inaugural match, held at the Accra Sports Stadium on July 17, 2024, saw a thrilling face-off between two of Ghana’s biggest football clubs—Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak—with Kotoko emerging victorious in what was a closely contested game.
This initiative has quickly gained recognition for blending civic celebration with sporting entertainment. It aims not only to entertain but also to remind Ghanaians of the core values of democracy—teamwork, fair play, inclusion, and spirited competition.
The 2025 edition, according to organisers, will raise the bar with more excitement, surprises, and enhanced fan engagement. Details about the match venue, ticketing, side events, and entertainment packages will all be disclosed during the launch.
This annual football fixture is more than just a game; it’s a symbolic expression of how democracy can be celebrated through culture and sports. By involving football, Ghana’s most beloved sport, the Parliament seeks to connect with citizens, particularly the youth, in a language they understand and appreciate.
Moreover, by bringing together clubs with rich histories and loyal fan bases, the Democracy Cup cultivates national unity, encourages political tolerance, and promotes peaceful civic participation.
