Akufo-Addo mourns Akwatia MP: I’m devastated

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia. He described the news as a devastating blow to both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Ghana’s Parliament.

In a Facebook post issued on Monday, July 7, 2025, following Kumi’s death, Nana Addo paid tribute to him, referring to Kumi as a beloved and admired figure within the NPP, as well as a passionate advocate for the people of Akwatia.

He remarked, “The legislator was adored and loved by party faithful and cherished by all who knew him or shared acquaintances with him.”

Kumi passed away after a short illness. His absence from recent parliamentary sittings had raised concerns among his colleagues, and the news of his passing cast a somber mood over the House.

He was a first-time legislator elected on the NPP ticket in 2024. He had recently been involved in a high-profile legal battle over his legitimacy as an MP, which he eventually won.

Nana Addo extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the people of Akwatia, and the leadership of the NPP. He also called on Ghanaians to remember the late MP for his dedication to public service and his unwavering belief in the potential of Ghana’s democracy.

However, Parliament buried its order of business on Monday to pay tribute to the sudden passing of the late Ernest Yaw Kumi.

Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader, in an official communication, said “Mr Speaker, one of us has been summoned to the Parliament above. This member was a young politician from the Eastern Region, in his first term in this chamber, carrying with him a promise to contribute to the discourse of our democratic enterprise.”

He added that the late MP was known for his intellect, diligence, and vibrant personality.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the late MP was reportedly in good health over the weekend, actively participating in parliamentary committee work, making his sudden demise shocking to his colleagues.
