Toxic ‘Sukudai’ cocktail raises health alarm after lab tests kill rats within 24 hours

Authorities have launched an operation in Kumasi to clamp down on a controversial street cocktail known as Sukudai following alarming laboratory findings by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Preliminary tests by the university’s Department of Pharmacology revealed that the drink—also known as Madara Sukudai—contains harmful chemicals including acetone, zinc chloride and ethanol, substances experts warn can severely damage the liver and kidneys.

Researchers say all laboratory rats administered the concoction died within 24 hours, even at low doses. Scientists also discovered the substance was corrosive enough to melt plastic containers, raising serious concerns about its safety for human consumption.

The drink, often marketed as a “heart cleanser,” is commonly sold in Zongo communities and auto mechanic shops, particularly among young people.

Health experts warn the burning sensation consumers feel may be due to chemical irritation rather than any health benefit, cautioning that the drink could cause gastrointestinal damage and organ failure.

Meanwhile, National Security operatives have arrested a trader suspected of supplying chemicals used in preparing the drink as investigations continue. Authorities are urging the public to avoid consuming Sukudai while further studies are conducted.
