Oppong Nkrumah Sues Deputy CEO of Cocoa Marketing Company Over Galamsey Allegations

Member of Parliament for Ofoase‑Ayirebi and former Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has filed a defamation suit at the High Court in Accra against Deputy Managing Director (Operations) of the Cocoa Marketing Company of Ghana and Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Eastern Region, Jamal Konney.

The writ, issued by his lawyer Daniel Martey Addo Esq., Managing Counsel of Nkrumah & Associates, cites statements allegedly made by Mr. Konney during a live broadcast on Okay FM on February 13, 2026. In the broadcast, Mr. Konney is said to have accused Oppong Nkrumah of importing Chinese workers to Akyemansa to engage in illegal mining (“galamsey”) activities that destroyed cocoa farms.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah contends that the allegations are false, malicious, and calculated to damage his reputation. He argues that the statements portray him as complicit in criminal activity, corrupt, and unfit for public office.

The suit seeks:
* A declaration that the statements are defamatory.
* General damages of GHS 20 million for injury to reputation.
* Aggravated and exemplary damages of GHS 10 million.
* An order for a full and unconditional apology and retraction on Okay FM, in three national newspapers, and across digital platforms.
* A perpetual injunction restraining Mr. Konney from repeating the allegations.
* Removal of all defamatory material from radio archives, online publications, and social media.

According to the statement of claim, the Plaintiff avers that the broadcast has caused severe reputational harm, emotional distress, public ridicule, and erosion of trust among constituents and stakeholders.
