WAFCON 2026: Morocco Withdraws as Host With 60 Days to Tournament

Reports indicate that Morocco has pulled out as the host nation of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), just 60 days before the tournament’s scheduled kickoff on March 17.

The withdrawal is said to stem from lingering tensions linked to events during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final between Morocco and Senegal, which reportedly sparked serious disputes within the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Morocco had previously hosted WAFCON in 2022 and 2024, and was poised to make history as the first country to host three consecutive editions of the biennial championship.

As of now, CAF is yet to officially confirm Morocco’s withdrawal or announce a replacement host. However, rumours are circulating that South Africa will step in as the new host nation, with the competition expected to run from March 17 to April 3. The 2026 WAFCON will also serve as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
