Ghana Red Cross Society Office At Bunso Roundabout Shutdown Due To Engulfing Filth

The Ghana Red Cross Society office at Bunso Roundabout along the Accra–Kumasi Highway has been shut down for years due to worsening sanitation conditions caused by indiscriminate waste dumping around the facility.

The office, originally set up to provide emergency life-saving services, is located near a waste collection point. However, poor waste management and constant overflow have left the area engulfed in filth and stench, forcing the facility to close indefinitely.

The Red Cross office is not the only establishment affected. Several businesses operating near the roundabout are demanding the relocation of the waste collection centre to a less populated area.

Residents of Bunso and Nsutem in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region say the situation has become a major public health concern. They complain that the waste container frequently overflows, spreading refuse into nearby spaces and emitting a strong odour that disrupts daily life.

The sanitation problem is also reportedly affecting a nearby hospital, heightening fears about health and safety in the community.

Food vendors and taxi drivers working around the roundabout say the persistent stench is driving customers away and hurting their income. Management of Linda Door Restaurant, which operates a branch in the area, has also raised concerns about the location of the waste site.

In response, the Fanteakwa South District Assembly has evacuated the accumulated waste. District Chief Executive Mercy Korang says authorities are considering a permanent relocation of the dump site to address concerns from residents and businesses.
