The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has assured the public that it will not shield the suspended headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai, if investigations into allegations of sexual abuse establish his guilt.
The party says it expects law enforcement agencies to conduct an independent and thorough investigation, stressing that the outcome must be determined by the evidence rather than political considerations.
Addressing a press conference at the party’s headquarters on Thursday, October 22, 2026, General Secretary Fifi Kwetey said the party would not interfere in the investigation and was committed to ensuring that the truth emerges.
“We do not endorse any such conduct, and we want the law enforcement to do an independent job. We are sure they will, and this party would not in any way interfere,” he said.
Mr. Kwetey emphasized that the party would accept the findings of the investigation, whether they exonerate or implicate the suspended headmaster.
“We want the truth to be brought out. On the back of the truth, the country would have clear assurance that as a party and as a government, we do not cover anybody. If he’s found guilty, he’ll pay the price. If he’s not guilty, we’ll be happy for him,” he stated.
The General Secretary also explained why the party initially called for Mr. Abdulai to withdraw from his position before subsequently insisting that he be given the opportunity to clear his name, in keeping with the presumption of innocence.
According to Mr Kwetey, the party did not have access to the full material presented by investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni when it first took a position on the allegations.
“The party unfortunately did not have access to Manasseh’s comprehensive disclosure as of Monday on his radio program. Manasseh aired his video and his tapes the evening of that day,” he said.
He explained that the party reviewed its initial position after examining the footage and recordings released by the journalist, prompting a change in its stance on the matter.
“Soon after watching those tapes comprehensively, it was clear that our earlier decision needed to be changed. And that actually is what saw the change of the decision as you saw happen on Tuesday even before midday,” he added.
Meanwhile, the suspended headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, says he has been cautioned and granted self-recognisance bail by the Police.
