Four Ghanaians have died in separate incidents linked to violence, intimidation, and harassment targeting African nationals in South Africa.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed this at a media briefing on Monday, September 7, 2026.
The deaths involve Bashiru Issahaq, Kwadwo Antwi, Amoonu Jailor Nash, and Ebenezer Ayi Tawiah.
According to Mr. Ablakwa, Issahaq, a 44-year-old father of three, was killed on June 30 in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, during an attack by anti-immigrant protesters.
His identity was initially contested by South African authorities but was later confirmed following interventions by the Ghanaian government.
The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria subsequently lodged a formal protest with South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation and filed a complaint with the South African Police Service.
Mr. Ablakwa said Ghana had insisted on a full and transparent investigation into Issahaq’s death and would continue to push for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
The second victim, Kwadwo Antwi, was reportedly murdered in Prieska in the Northern Cape Province on July 18, while Amoonu Jailor Nash was killed by unidentified assailants in East London on April 3.
The minister said investigations into both cases were still ongoing.
In the fourth case, Ebenezer Ayi Tawiah reportedly died shortly after arriving at the Accra International Airport on August 17. The government says he allegedly struggled to access medical care after being harassed by South African vigilantes.
Following his death, the Foreign Affairs Ministry arranged for his remains to be transferred to the Police Hospital in Accra for an autopsy.
Mr. Ablakwa extended condolences to the bereaved families and said the government would continue diplomatic engagements with South African authorities to secure justice for the deceased.
The disclosure comes amid renewed anti-foreigner attacks in parts of South Africa, particularly KwaZulu-Natal, raising concerns over the safety of migrants from other African countries.
As part of its response, the Ghanaian government has facilitated the evacuation of 1,964 Ghanaians from South Africa between May 27 and September 4.
Ghana is expected to continue discussions with South African authorities on measures to protect its nationals and address the incidents of violence.
