The Ghana Police Service says six suspects have been arrested in connection with Tuesday’s violent attack on New Winneba in the Central Region, which left three people dead and 15 others injured, including a police officer.
According to the Central Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, the attack occurred on September 1, 2026, at about 10:40 a.m., when an estimated 300-strong mob armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze stormed New Winneba Township. The group attacked natives of the area, damaged stores and residential properties belonging to them, and clashed with residents in scenes that sent fifteen injured victims, including an officer, to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba. Three people were confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty.
Police personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters, Agona Swedru Division and Mankessim Division, together with the Inspector-General of Police’s special team, were deployed as reinforcement, backed by two armoured vehicles from National Police Headquarters, to beef up security in the area.
During the rioting, police arrested six suspects: Kweku Kakraba, 52; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tulasi, 19; Samuel Gyasi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22. One locally-made single-barrel gun and one AAA empty cartridge were retrieved from the crime scene. All six suspects remain in police custody assisting with investigations.
To prevent further escalation, police say the following measures have been put in place:
- Six snap checkpoints have been mounted in the area.
- Day and night patrols have been intensified.
- Personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have been deployed to monitor the situation.
The Central Regional Police Command says the area remains calm and the situation is currently under control, though investigations into the attack and its underlying land dispute are ongoing.
