Government has respectfully declined a GH¢20 million support package from MTN intended for Ghanaian victims of recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says the Mahama Administration, together with local partners, has already made adequate financial provisions to support the ongoing evacuation and reintegration of affected Ghanaians.
He explained that the decision was taken to ensure that resources earmarked for the response are coordinated through the government-led evacuation and reintegration programme.
The government has been facilitating the return of Ghanaians affected by the attacks, amid concerns over their safety and welfare in South Africa.
The latest development follows MTN’s offer of GH¢20 million to support Ghanaian victims of the xenophobic attacks.
Government says while it appreciates MTN’s gesture, it believes the existing arrangements are sufficient to meet the immediate financial needs of the affected citizens.
