Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin says he intends to pursue legal action over what he describes as false and defamatory statements made against him amid the ongoing dispute over the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
The Effuttu MP says the personal attacks against him are an attempt to divert attention from the financial concerns he has raised over the programme.
The Minority Leader has been demanding answers over an alleged GH¢22 billion loss linked to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, citing an International Monetary Fund report which said the programme recorded losses of more than US$1.7 billion in 2025.
GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi, however, has rejected the characterisation of the US$1.7 billion as a loss incurred by GoldBod. He argues that GoldBod acted only as a buying agent for the Bank of Ghana and was not responsible for the subsequent sale of the gold or the negotiation of off-take agreements.
The dispute escalated after Mr Gyamfi described Mr Afenyo-Markin as an “extortionist” and challenged him to sue if he believed the description was defamatory.
Mr Afenyo-Markin has now indicated that he will pursue the appropriate legal remedies, although he has not disclosed the specific action he intends to take.
