The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has charged Board Chairpersons and heads of agencies under the Ministry to strictly comply with the Public Financial Management Act to ensure prudent and efficient use of public resources.
He said adherence to the law was critical to strengthening financial accountability across the health sector and ensuring that public resources were used effectively.
The minister made the call during the opening of a three-day mid-year review of the government’s health sector commitments under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 Manifesto, being held in Ho.
The review brings together board chairpersons, chief executive officers, and directors of health agencies, institutions, and programmes under the ministry to assess progress, identify implementation challenges, and agree on measures to accelerate delivery.
As part of the exercise, participants are receiving training in Public Financial Management, with the Ministry seeking to reinforce responsible management of resources across its agencies and institutions.
The review is also assessing progress on key government health commitments, including the Free Primary Healthcare programme, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares), the expansion of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the retooling of health facilities, and the introduction of specialized nursing programmes.
Other areas under review include the construction of regional hospitals in the six newly created regions, the establishment of cataract centres, the formalization of allowances for nursing trainees, the recruitment of health professionals, and the status of abandoned health projects.
Mr. Akandoh also highlighted key achievements recorded across the health sector and commended agencies whose work had contributed to the progress.
The Ministry of Health said the review forms part of efforts to strengthen coordination and accountability while advancing the government’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage.
