The Ghana Police Service has secured a 10-year prison sentence with hard labour for a 42-year-old man convicted of defiling a seven-year-old boy in Wa in the Upper West Region.
According to a police statement, Eliyasu Kunateh was found guilty by the Wa High Court, presided over by His Lordship Justice Osei-Usu Antwi, on July 23, 2026, and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
Police said the convict was arrested on January 20, 2026, after the victim’s mother reported the incident, which occurred on January 17, 2026.
Following the complaint, investigators from the Regional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) launched investigations and referred the child to a medical facility for examination and psychosocial support. The suspect was subsequently remanded into police custody after being arraigned before the Wa High Court.
The Upper West Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and pledged to continue pursuing all reported cases of child abuse, sexual abuse and gender-based violence.
The Command also urged parents, guardians, caregivers and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected abuse to the nearest police station for immediate action.
