Transport operators have suspended plans to increase transport fares by 30% following a meeting with government.
The operators had earlier proposed the 30 percent upward adjustment in transport fares in response to rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of vehicle spare parts.
They argued that the current cost of running their businesses has become unsustainable.
However, following a closed-door meeting with the Transport Ministry, the operators have decided to put the fare hike on hold after the government asked for more time to implement measures aimed at reducing prices of petroleum products.
According to Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Samuel Amoah, the union’s assessment indicates that fuel prices could rise again in the next pricing window on Friday
He explained that the prices at the pumps on Friday will inform the decision or next course of action to be taken by the GPRTU and other transport operators.
He added that they will still engage government on the possible increase in transport fares if fuel prices go up as expected in the next pricing window.
