The Coalition Against Galamsey has commended the government for revoking Executive Instrument (E.I.) 144, describing the decision as a bold step towards protecting one of Ghana’s most important ecological assets.
At a news conference on Monday, July 20, the Coalition praised Cabinet’s decision of June 24, 2026, to revoke E.I. 144, which had removed portions of the Achimota Forest Reserve from protected status for purposes other than conservation.
“We commend Government for the bold and decisive Cabinet decision of 24th June 2026 to revoke Executive Instrument E.I. 144, as amended by E.I. 234,” the Coalition said.
The Coalition acknowledged the political and institutional efforts required to reverse the decision, saying the outcome demonstrated a commitment to prioritizing the long-term well-being of citizens over short-term political considerations.
“We know what it took, politically and institutionally, to secure this outcome, and we highly commend this government for choosing citizens’ well-being and intergenerational benefit over short-term political expediency,” it added.
The group’s remarks come days after the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources announced that Cabinet had revoked E.I. 144, effectively restoring the Achimota Forest Reserve to its full protected status after years of public concern over attempts to alter its legal protection.
