The Gbewaa Palace has named Kampakuya Naa Yakubu as the Regent of the Dagbon Kingdom. According to the announcement, Naa Yakubu will serve as caretaker of the Kingdom and overseeing affairs on behalf of the Dagbon throne in accordance with customs.
A Regent is usually appointed when the Yaa Naa is incapacitated due to ill health or dead. Accra News has gathered Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama was flown to South Africa for medical attention months ago. Reports however suggest he did not make it back into the country alive. Preparations are currently underway for his burial in accordance with Islamic principles.
His Royal Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari II (formerly the Yoo Naa of Savelugu) was selected as the new Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom on January 18, 2019. He was officially enskinned as Yaa Naa Abukari II on January 25, 2019, ending a 17-year period of vacancy and chieftaincy disputes in the kingdom.
He was 86 years old.
