Kyebi: Galamseyers clash with military, one shot

Some illegal miners clashed with armed military personnel at Kyebi in the Eastern Region. The development which happened on Saturday, July 11, led to the shooting of one of the illegal miners in the leg.  The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has since condemned the development. Video of the confrontation involving a joint Military and Police team and some youth at Kyebi Zongo has since gone viral. The MP has urged residents to remain calm while calling for a thorough investigations into the matter.

The victim was reportedly shot in the leg during the incident, which involved security personnel believed to be attached to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).

In a statement issued on Sunday, July 12, the MP described the incident as unfortunate and said no community should have to endure such violence.

“I strongly condemn every form of violence and brutality that endangers the lives and safety of our people. While the full facts surrounding the incident are yet to be officially established, no community should have to witness such unfortunate scenes,” he said.

Mr. Agyemang said he had been informed that the injured man was receiving treatment at the Kyebi Government Hospital and wished him a full and speedy recovery on behalf of the people of Abuakwa South.

“As Member of Parliament, I remain committed to engaging all relevant stakeholders to ensure that peace, law and order prevail within our constituency,” he said.
