GBA Eastern Region Calls for Continued Protection of Judicial Independence

The Eastern Regional branch of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has renewed calls for the continued protection of judicial independence, stressing that the rule of law remains the cornerstone of Ghana’s democracy.

The appeal was made during the 44th Anniversary Remembrance Service of the Martyrs of the Rule of Law held at the Koforidua High Court to honour the memory of Justices Cecilia Koranteng-Addow, Frederick Poku Sarkodie, Kwadwo Agyei Agyepong and Major Sam Acquah.

Addressing the gathering, Eastern Regional Chairman of the GBA, Francis Polley, said the annual commemoration serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the slain judges, who lost their lives while faithfully discharging their duties.

The GBA Chairman stressed that protecting the independence of the judiciary is essential to preserving justice and democracy, urging judges and legal practitioners to continue drawing inspiration from the martyrs’ courage in administering justice.

Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey reaffirmed government’s commitment to safeguarding judicial independence and strengthening the administration of justice.

The remembrance service brought together members of the Judiciary, the Ghana Bar Association, security agencies, government officials and members of the public to honour the martyrs and reaffirm their collective commitment to protecting the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law in Ghana.
