Ghana Finishes 17th at African Athletics Championships with Five Medals

Ghana has ended the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships without winning a gold medal.

The competition, which concluded on Sunday, May 17, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra, saw the host nation finish 17th on the medals table with a total of five medals.

Team Ghana’s haul comprised one silver and four bronze medals, falling short of expectations despite competing on home soil.

On the final day of action, Ghana’s medal hopes faded as team captain Joseph Paul Amoah placed fifth in the men’s 200 metres final. The women’s 4×400 metres relay team also narrowly missed out on a podium finish after coming fourth, while the men’s relay team finished last in their race.

Ghana’s bronze medals came from the men’s and women’s 4×100 metres relay events, as well as individual performances by Alex Amankwah in the men’s 800 metres and Florence Agyemang in the women’s 400 metres.

The country’s only silver medal was secured by high jumper Esther Obenewaa.

South Africa topped the championship medal table with 18 medals, including nine golds, followed by Kenya and Ethiopia.

The result marks a disappointing finish for Ghana, which had hoped to leverage home advantage to secure a stronger medal performance.
