Businessman Ibrahim Mahama to gift Ghanaians first-ever medical air ambulance

Renowned Ghanaian businessman and Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners Company Limited, Ibrahim Mahama, has announced plans to convert his private aircraft into the country’s first fully functional medical air ambulance – a development expected to transform emergency healthcare delivery in Ghana.

Ghana currently lacks a dedicated medical jet or air ambulance system, leaving critical medical evacuations largely dependent on road transport, which is often challenged by traffic delays and long distances, particularly for patients in remote areas.

Historic first for Ghana

The Bombardier 604 jet, popularly known as “Dzata,” was flown out of the country on April 3, 2026, to undergo specialised upgrades that will transform it into a state‑of‑the‑art emergency medical aircraft equipped with advanced life‑support systems, intensive care facilities, and specialised medical equipment.

Once completed, the air ambulance will be capable of transporting critically ill or injured patients while providing continuous in‑flight medical care — a critical advantage in situations where time saved can mean lives rescued.

Enhancing emergency response and healthcare access

Medical jets are typically deployed for rapid evacuation and inter‑hospital transfers, especially in cases that require urgent specialist treatment not immediately available locally. The introduction of such services is expected to address longstanding gaps in Ghana’s emergency healthcare infrastructure.

This initiative has been widely praised for its humanitarian impact, with experts saying it could significantly improve access to urgent care for patients in life‑threatening conditions -such as severe trauma or complex medical emergencies – by bypassing geographic and infrastructural barriers that ground ambulances face.

Private sector support for national development

Mr Mahama’s intervention highlights the important role that private sector leadership can play in supporting national development, especially in critical sectors like healthcare. Known for his philanthropic contributions across education, healthcare and business development, Mahama has repeatedly supported individuals and communities in need.

Although specific details regarding the timeline for the air ambulance’s return and operational rollout have not yet been disclosed, expectations are high that the initiative will mark the beginning of expanded emergency medical services in Ghana.
