The Eastern Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the Eastern South Regional Police Command, has arrested a suspected notorious armed robber,and ten other suspected accomplices at Akateng near Asesewa in the Eastern Region.
The suspect, identified as Bube Gariba, was arrested on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation following a series of highway robberies recorded along the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
According to a statements signed by Chief Inspector Bridget Opoku, Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command,the operation was initiated by the Eastern Regional Police Intelligence Department as part of efforts to dismantle a robbery syndicate believed to be behind at least five recent attacks targeting commuters at Kwafokrom, Anoff on the Nsawam-Adeiso stretch, Apedwa, Adasawase-Ankaase and Enyiresi.
Preliminary investigations and interrogation, the Police said, indicate that Gariba has confessed to participating in three highway robbery incidents around Anyinam.
Police say the suspect disclosed that he received GH¢5,700 and GH¢1,500 from proceeds of the robberies.
Gariba also reportedly mentioned three accomplices identified as Mohammadu, Ali and Abdulai, while naming a man identified as Osmanu, a resident of Accra, as the alleged leader of the gang.
He told police that, Osmanu allegedly supplied the gang with two pump-action guns used to terrorise passengers during the robbery operations.
The Police said one of the alleged accomplices, Mohammadu, managed to escape after his wife allegedly alerted him to the presence of the Police and actively obstructed officers from arresting him.
His wife, identified as 22-year-old Karia Hawa Isha, was subsequently arrested.
Nine other persons were also picked up at the location and are currently undergoing screening to establish their possible involvement in the robbery incidents.
The Police said all suspects in custody are assisting with investigations, while a manhunt has been launched for the escaped suspect, Mohammadu, the alleged gang leader Osmanu and other members of the syndicate.
The Eastern Regional Police Command has assured residents and road users of intensified efforts to combat violent crime and improve security on major highways and in communities across the region.
The Police are also appealing to members of the public with information on the whereabouts of the wanted suspects or other criminal activities to report to the Eastern Regional Command.
