Awerco Construction Limited, the contractor responsible for the Weija-Gbawe Children’s Hospital, has threatened legal action against the Ministry of Health over a press release alleging procurement irregularities and delays in operationalising the facility.
In a letter dated May 8, 2026, Awerco’s lawyers said the ministry’s statement contained “inaccuracies and misrepresentations” that could harm the company’s reputation. The Ministry of Health had claimed inflated prices of medical equipment—allegedly up to 11 times actual costs—and implied that Awerco was responsible for commissioning delays.
Awerco denied the allegations, stating it fulfilled all contractual obligations and that concerns raised in correspondence—such as uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units and automatic voltage regulators—were to protect sensitive medical equipment and ensure proper end-user training. The company also said that outstanding payments from the ministry had delayed mandatory staff training necessary for the facility’s handover.
The contractor demanded a retraction of the disputed press release within 24 hours and warned that legal action would follow if the ministry fails to comply.
