the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Wenchi Municipal Assembly, Gloria Gyamfi, is making a bold call to include the fight against illegal mining—commonly known as Galamsey—as part of the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
Illegal mining has dominated national discourse, with growing public pressure on President John Mahama to declare a state of emergency—a move he has so far resisted. Despite this, some local leaders have taken proactive steps against the menace in their communities.
Speaking on GHToday on GHOne TV, Gloria Gyamfi shared her frontline efforts: “I sent people on the ground to investigate some tips about Galamsey activities. I personally followed up with security personnel in the community. We spent about four hours in the zone.” Though they found no miners actively working at the time, she confirmed ongoing intelligence gathering and pledged, “Anytime soon, we will strike again.”
On the proposal to make the fight against Galamsey a KPI for local leaders, Miss Gyamfi was clear: “Yes, I think it should, especially for those who have Galamsey issues. It’s not everywhere that faces this problem, so it can’t be generalized. But for those of us affected, it should definitely be part of our KPI.”
Her stance highlights a growing belief that accountability at the local government level is crucial in the battle against illegal mining.
