Speaker postpones recall of Parliament due to circumstances “beyond his control”

Members of Parliament are no longer expected resume work on October 14 as earlier communicated by the Speaker Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin. The recall has now been deferred indefinitely due to “circumstances beyond” the “control” of the Speaker.

Government had programmed its activities in the Legislative Chamber based on the earlier announcement. The controversial LI 2462 which allows for mining in forest reserves was expected to be revoked on the first day of sitting as announced by the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Dr. Dominic Ayine at the Galamsey Dialogue at the Jubilee House last week Friday.

“We have prepared an instrument that is LI 2505 in my office, and that will be laid in Parliament on the 14th of October,”.

“The Lands and Natural Resources Minister and I have agreed that on the 14th of October, when Parliament resumes, we will lay that instrument to revoke the famous LI 2462.”

But the latest communication from the Speaker means the LI will still exist a while longer.
