The health status of former Finance Minister Kenneth Yaw Ofori-Atta has come under scrutiny in the past few days. This follows a letter from Mr. Ofori-Atta’s lawyers to the Special Prosecutor informing the Office of the inability of their client to honour a long standing invitation as a result of health complications.
The OSP consequently saw through its threat and declared Mr. Ofori-Atta wanted for failing to show up in person on June 2 without any medical report to back the claim of the lawyers.
However, a day after the declaration from the OSP, a letter has surfaced from the Mayo Clinic concerning what exactly the health condition of the former finance minister is. According to the letter signed by Ahmed Abdalrhim, M.D. ”Mr. Ofori-Atta has undergone an MR-guided Biopsy and has been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.”
The letter added the former minister had consequently been scheduled for surgery on June 13 or a date earlier than that.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor has however stated such a document in circulation had not come to its attention as at the time the decision was being taking to re-declare Mr. Ofori-Atta wanted. The OSP nonetheless insists the letter from the Mayo Clinic does not indicate Mr. Ofori-Atta is incapacitated to the extent he is unable to return to the country.
