The Eastern South Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, following an alleged assault on Alhaji Masawudu Osman, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) third national vice-chairman, during the September 2 by-election in Akwatia.
In a statement issued on Friday, September 12, police said Azorka was picked up in Tamale on September 10 and taken through initial questioning.
He was granted bail after giving a caution statement and is expected to report to the Regional Command in Kyebi on Tuesday, September 16, when he will be arraigned before court.
The confrontation reportedly occurred at the Akwatia Lorry Station in the Vawaso Electoral Area. Masawudu Osman alleged that he was attacked while speaking to the press.
“I have been assigned to supervise and monitor the election at Akwatia Zongo. In fact, I was granting an interview when a national vice chairman of the NDC, Azorka because of ignorance comes straight to where I was granting an interview to attack me,” he recounted.
He further claimed the incident happened in the presence of security officers, alleging that Azorka threatened to have him and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin caned.
The Eastern South Regional Police Command, in a statement signed by DSP David Fianko Oryere, assured the public of thorough investigations into the matter and appealed for calm as the case proceeds.
