Daddy Lumba’s one-week observance slated for Aug 30 in Accra

Ghanaian music legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, will be honoured with a one-week observance in Accra on Saturday, August 30, 2025, as part of funeral arrangements confirmed by his family.

According to the family head, Kofi Owusu, the main funeral rites will take place in Kumasi, in adherence to the royal traditions of the Ashanti Kingdom, where Lumba hails from.

Mr. Owusu made this known after leading a delegation to officially inform Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, about the singer’s passing.

He explained that the family prioritized traditional protocols, seeking the blessing of the Asante monarch before going public with any funeral plans.

Lumba wasn’t just a celebrated artist; he was a royal. Otumfuo reminded us of that, and it’s only proper that we honour him in his ancestral home,” he said.

The upcoming one-week celebration in Accra is expected to draw massive attendance, following the overwhelming turnout at the candlelight vigil held on August 2 at Independence Square, where fans gathered in black attire, lit candles, and paid tribute to the Highlife icon.

“For the One Week, we can do it in Accra. However, for the funeral, we need to return Otumfuo’s son to him in Kumasi for the final funeral rites, so it will be held in Kumasi.

“We will equally inform the Ga Manste. The One Week observance is on Saturday, August 30. We are still deliberating on the venue. Looking at the huge crowd at the Candlelight Vigil last Saturday and taking into consideration the initial decision, the venue needs to be changed.

“A big venue has become necessary to avoid chaos or stampede to ensure that everything goes on well,” he stated.

A follow-up vigil is scheduled for August 9 at Heroes’ Park in Kumasi. Mr. Owusu stated that plans for the final funeral are underway, and details will be shared with the public soon.

He called on Ghanaians to continue offering their support.
