The last act of the house of the Legislature yesterday, June 10, 2025 was as dramatic and it was chaotic. It was just a regular day for MPs with very little headline grabbing activities until the very last minute literally.
MP for Effiduase/Asokore and ranking member for the committee on Health Dr. Ayew Afriye had been given one task; to second the motion for adjournment moved by Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor. Dr. Afriye however elected to read a joint statement he’s authored with Weija-Gbawe MP Jerry Ahmed Shaib on the strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association in the process.
The development incurred the wrath of first deputy speaker Bernard Ahiafor. Dr. Afriye however ignored signals from the speaker to halt his expedition since it was without approval. The development compelled the first deputy speaker to order for his removal from the chamber.
The evacuation was however resisted by MPs on the minority side who formed a shield to thwart the attempt by the officers of the Marshall’s Department.
Addressing the media after the episode, Dr. Ayew Afriye accused Mr. Ahiafor of excessive partisanship. He questioned the basis upon which the first deputy speaker would not admit the statement for it to be read.
